Happy New Year!

Welcome 2025! I hope your holidays were filled with happy memories to usher in the new year.

Looking Back and Forward At The Same Time

I love my sketchbooks as there’s a wealth of information in them. And sticking to my practice, I completed the sketchbook on the last day of 2024. Before I call it “a wrap” and grab a new sketchbook for 2025, there is one more final page in the 2024 book and it’s called “Back & Forward” – a summary page. In short, I flip through all of the sketches and identify the ones that have potential for a larger artwork or the strongest or interesting use of materials. It’s a good practice.

If you have participated in one of my Sketchbook Workshops, you might consider doing the same final step. And if you would like to participate in a 2025 Sketchbook Workshop, let me know via email and I’ll schedule a date in January.

To quote music pioneer Brian Eno “Stop thinking about art works as objects, and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences.”

In 2024, the project was to complete one new artwork each week – starting on Sunday and ending on Saturday – to discover a new direction in my work. This project was driven by a large roll of watercolor paper Canson 140 lb. (60" x 180") nestled in the corner of the studio. I cut the paper into 14.5" x 14.5" squares. This body of work called “Organized Chaos” is looking for a place to exhibit so if you have suggestions, please shoot me an email. It can be organized chronologically, continuous line, in clusters of 2, 4 or more, or by month or independently of each other.

Few More Words

“Artists are the heroes of our day: they are creating, capturing and reflecting what’s happening right in front of us – in real time. Incredibly important stories are being told, and we need to slow our pace to venture beyond the surface aesthetics and dive deeper into the artist’s story.” ~ Julie Kinzelman
